Why Does the World Need Catholic Education?
By Father Richard Kunst
I have always loved the scene in the Gospels when Jesus takes his three closest apostles with him up a mountain to witness his transfiguration. The reason why I like that particular passage is mostly because of St. Peter’s words to the transfigured Christ, when he said, “Lord it is good for us to be here.” When it comes to our Catholic Schools in the diocese and in particular Stella Maris Academy, I make St. Peter’s words my own. Lord, it is good for us to be here! There are so many reasons for those sentiments, but for sure one of them is that Stella Maris Academy is a place of calm and sanity in our ever-growing secularized culture. Christ reigns here! It seems like every month, there are new trends and ideas in the surrounding world that seem to test the limits of sanity, and yet here we remain as a Catholic Christian institution fostering love of Christ and neighbor, not only for our students but hopefully for their families as well. I know much has been written about the excitement surrounding our new Junior and Senior High School, but all the more is that excitement warranted knowing that our children have a complete continuum of education here in Duluth so that they can remain in this Christ-centered school. Recently Bishop Felton shared with some of us priests the unfortunate trends in our diocese where numbers are declining in participation of the sacraments, but one number that was noticeably growing are the number of children in our Catholic schools Diocese wide. That is a great sign! People inherently know that we need Catholic Schools more than ever, and they are taking advantage of them! God Bless Stella Maris Academy now and for years to come!
